REPORT ON TWO DAY SALE OF ANTIQUES AND SELECTED ITEMS INCLUDING FURNITURE, CLOCKS, MISCELLANEA, CHINA GLASS, SILVER, SILVER PLATE AND JEWELLERY, PICTURES AND PAINTINGS HELD ON THURSDAY 19th and FRIDAY 20th JANUARY, 2006
The first auction of 2006 at Rendells Auction Rooms was greeted with a good entry of antiques and selected items.
The Furniture Section was well received by private collectors and the trade and a large pair of Black Forest carved game plaques led the section; each plaque was 41” high by 25” across and carved with chamois and birds. Interest was shown from the trade and private collectors with a Wiltshire collector winning the day with a bid of £2,400. Other highlights within the Furniture Section included: £780 bid by the Devon trade for a Victorian mahogany pedestal breakfast table; £360 paid by a local collector for a Victorian breakfront pedestal desk; £330 for a 19th Century mahogany double fold writing slope; £320 paid for a pair of 19th Century rosewood framed tub chairs; £320 for a Regency rosewood pedestal work table, and £310 for an early 20th Century oak desk.
A particularly fine quality 19th Century French mantel clock led the Clock Section with a bid of £1,080. The gilt metal clock was decorated with hand painted porcelain panels and was sold over the telephone to the Irish trade. An oak and mahogany longcase clock sold to the local trade for £760.
The Copper, Brass and Miscellanea Section contained the usual eclectic mix of items with nearly three hundred lots on offer. A pair of German military binoculars exceeded expectations and sold to a collector for £540. Other results included: £390 paid by the local trade for a horn and silver banded picture frame; £300 paid for a horn and silver ink stand; £200 for a cased sextant by Cary of London; £130 for a cased violin, and £120 paid by a local collector for a horn powder flask.
A Selection of Books from a local estate sold well with a finely illustrated book entitled “Butterflies in their Floral Homes” by Paul Jerrard, selling for £360; two Cabinet Bibles by James Fittler sold for £280; a 1923 Hardy’s Fly Fishing catalogue sold for £90, and various mixed lots of books sold between £50 and £250.
Friday’s China Section contained a pair of rare Moorcroft Macintyre Florianware vases which found favour with a local collector and sold for £950. The Irish trade bid £460 for a Minton’s jardiniere commemorating the Coronation of King George V. A pair of Minton Majolica figures also sold for £460. Other highlights included: £340 for a 19th Century sealed bottle; £150 paid for a Clarice Cliff Fantasque bowl; £90 paid by a local collector for a Royal Doulton Flambe vase , and £85 for a Will Young Runnaford pottery figure group.
The Silver and Silver Plate Section was well received. A mixed lot of spoons sold for £310 and £290 for a pair of candlesticks. Other highlights included: £270 was paid by the Exeter Trade for a silver plated centrepiece; £240 for a silver cased travel clock; £210 for a silver salver by Mappin & Webb, and £190 for an early engraved box.
The Jewellery Section suffered from a smaller entry, but a number of pieces still sold well. An 18ct. gold three stone diamond cross-over ring sold for £335 and a heavy carved 19th Century ring with pearls and enamel sold for £220.
Paintings sold well with a Limited Edition Print by David Shepherd entitle4d “Tiger in the Sun” sold to a telephone bidder for £870. A pair of Moorland Scenes by Douglas Pinder sold to the local trade for £235 and an oil on board of a Maritime Scene by William James Laidley sold for £230.
