SEPTEMBER SALE REPORT 2009
REPORT ON TWO DAY AUCTION AND SELECTED ITEMS: OUTSIDE EFFECTS, FURNITURE, CLOCKS, BAROMETERS, MISCELLANEA, COLLECTABLES, CHINA, GLASS, METALWORK, RUGS, BOOKS, TOYS, SILVER PLATE, SILVER, JEWELLERY, PICTURES AND PAINTINGS. HELD ON THURSDAY 17th AND FRIDAY 18th SEPTEMBER 2009.
Rendells monthly two day sale of antiques and selected items was held on Thursday 17th and Friday 18th September 2009. This month’s sale included silver plate, silver and jewellery which went up for sale on Friday afternoon. A good attendance was present on both the sale days. Top price over the two day sale was achieved by lot 1946, a pair of Joseph Thors oil on canvas of figures by cottages which sold to the phone for £2,000. The second highest price was for lot 261, a very large mahogany Georgian secretaire which sold for £800. Further top prices to mention included lot 1527, a cry baby Simon and Holbeck composition doll which made £580. Lot 423, a 19th century rosewood and mahogany glazed bookcase sold to the Exeter trade for £510. Lot 274, a set of six oak Chippendale style dining chairs made £460 selling to the Cornish trade. Lot 1773, an 18 ct gold diamond cluster ring with diamond shoulders sold to a private buyer for £450.
DOWNSTAIRS FURNITURE: A good trade was received in the downstairs furniture sale on Thursday morning with a number of lots selling for over the £200 mark. These included lot 162, a walnut and mahogany Queen Anne style bow front chest on chest which was purchased by the Exeter trade for £230. Lot 170, a leather high back armchair made £280. Lots 112 and 254 both sold for £260, these being an oak three drawer dresser base and a painted table with stripped top and a set of six matching chairs. Three lots made £230.These were lot 151, a nice set of six oak chapel chairs. Lot 164, a Victorian mahogany chest of five drawers. Lot 168, an oak barley twist monk’s bench. Lot 245 an oak display cabinet sold well reaching £210. Lot 279 an elm fold over card table made £205, and finally lot 231 a pine chest of five drawers sold well to reach £200.
UPSTAIRS FURNITURE: Furniture continued to sell well upstairs with three good sales worth mentioning. These were lot 405, a mahogany pedestal breakfast table which sold for £290. Lot 381, a small rare flame mahogany bow front corner cupboard in a nice condition sold well as expected for £270, and lot 409, a 19th century mahogany bow front chest of five drawers made £240 being purchased by the Ashburton trade.
CLOCKS AND BAROMETERS: A slightly lower number of lots were included in the Clocks and Barometers section on Thursday afternoon. A Georgian eight day long case clock movement sold to a local collector for £210.
MISCELLANEA AND COLLECTABLES: The Miscellanea and Collectables consisted of over 150 lots.Top price in this section was for lot 825, a good ivory letter opener and one other which after receiving much attention made £410 selling to the Exeter trade. Lot 813, a quantity of postcards of planes and other military was purchased by the Exeter postcard trade for £260. Lot 803, a very nice and rare miniature Croquet set on a turned wooden stand sold at £240. Lot 703, a quantity railway items sold well for £220. Finally lot 852, a nice rare pair of Carl Zeiss DF 12X binoculars made £200
CHINA AND GLASS: Nearly 300 lots of china and glass went up for sale on Friday morning. Lot 1294, a pair of tall Japanese vases were purchased by the Dartmoor trade for £240. Lot 1280, a Meissen floral and bird decorated cup and saucer sold for £165, and lot 1297, a set of three Royal Crown Derby plates hand painted and signed by W.E.J Dean went for £155.
SILVER: Lot 1647, an ornate three footed silver salver stamped London 1745 was knocked down for £310. Lot 1643, an ornate silver base and cover stamped London 1836 by Chas. Reily and Geo. Storer sold well to the Exeter trade for £220. Lot 1644, silver skewer stamped London 1791, by John Wren and one other stamped London 1805, by Simon Harris was purchased by the same buyer for £200. Finally lot 1603, a pair of Georgian silver decanter labels sold for £195.
JEWELLERY: Over 100 lots of jewellery went up for sale after the silver section with some good prices being achieved. The second highest price was for lot 1772, a pair of white gold ruby and diamond cluster earrings going for £350. Lot 1770, a pair of gold rosecut diamond and garnet earrings made £310. Lot 1726, a silver cased fuse pocket watch fetched £255. Two lots sold for £230. These being lot 1688, a bag of assorted ladies gold watches and rings and lot 1776, a 9ct gold Edwardian style pendant set with green and clear stones. Lot 1724 made £200 being a 1982 Half Sovereign, a 9ct gold mount and a 9ct gold scrap. A bag of assorted gold rings and bracelet sold to the Exeter trade for £170.
PICTURES AND PAINTINGS: The pair of Joseph Thors oils sold for £2,000. A Henry Moore signed oil on canvas of a seascape went for £260. An early 19th century English school oil on canvas laid on card portrait painting. Lot 1936, a John Bampfield oil on canvas of a Victorian evening street scene sold for £220. An oil on canvas of a mother and child in a kitchen made £160.
