OCTOBER SALE REPORT 2009

 

REPORT ON TWO DAY AUCTION OF ANTIQUES AND SELECTED ITEMS: OUTSIDE EFFECTS, FURNITURE, CLOCKS, BAROMETERS, MISCELLANEA, COLLECTABLES, CHINA, GLASS, METALWORK, RUGS, BOOKS, TOYS, SPORTING, FISHING, PICTURES AND PAINTINGS. HELD ON THURSDAY 22nd AND FRIDAY 23rd OCTOBER 2009.

 

Rendells monthly two day sale of antiques and selected items was held on Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd October 2009. This month’s sale included a private collection of fishing and sporting items which went up for sale on Friday afternoon. Top price over the two day sale was for lot 1511, a rare large Marklin stationary steam engine which sold to the Torquay trade for nearly twice its reserve price reaching £1,900. The second highest price was achieved by lot 460, a fine 19th century floral painted Sheraton Pembroke table which sold for its reserve price of £1,000. Further top prices included two lots which sold for £940 each. These were lot 327, a nice oak and mahogany cross banded dresser and lot 721, a cased display of 19th century stuffed and mounted humming birds which sold to a Cornish collector. Finally lot 1510 an early Steiff teddy bear standing 14” tall sold too a private collector for £900.

 

DOWNSTAIRS FURNITURE:

Over two hundred lots were included in the downstairs furniture auction on Thursday morning receiving a fair trade as usual. The second highest price in this section was for lot 294, a Victorian mahogany linen press which sold to the Exeter trade for £380. Lot 325, a large and impressive Bass advertising wall mirror achieved the third highest price here of £370. Lot 158, a French oak buffet sold to the Exmoor trade for £300. Lot 315 a nice pine shop counter sold for £280. Lots 206 and 318 both made £250. These being: an inlaid mahogany bookcase and a nice oak extending Victorian dining table. Lots 154 and 155 both sold for £230 each. This was for a pine dresser base and a Maple and Co Arts and Crafts oak sideboard. Three lots which sold for £220 each were lot 164, a pair of mahogany chest of drawers. Lot 219A, a 19th century mahogany dwarf waterfall bookcase and lot 324 a carved oak hall settee. Finally two further lots which sold for over the two hundred pound mark were: lot 267, an Edwardian mahogany extending dining table which sold for £210 and lot 197, an early Victorian mahogany chest of drawers which sold for £200.

 

UPSTAIRS FURNITURE: 

Furniture continued to sell well upstairs on Thursday morning with lot 506 achieving the second highest price of £590. This was for a Victorian walnut extending dining table. To follow this was lot 509 selling for £480, a mahogany two drawer and three tier side table having galleried top. Lot 472, a red lacquered Chinese cabinet sold to a Totnes dealer for £450. Lot 482, a set of six Lancashire ladder backed dining chairs sold for their reserve price of £400. Lot 507, a Victorian mahogany pedestal cylinder desk sold to the Exeter trade for £330. Lot 413, an antique oak four panelled and carved coffer was purchased by the Cornish trade for £320. Lots 416 and 468 both sold for £300. These were: a fine Georgian mahogany piecrust circular table top and a 19th century mahogany framed salon settee. Finally further lots which sold for over the two hundred pound mark were: lot 464, a 19th century mahogany glazed specimen cabinet which made £240. Lot 488 sold for £230 to the Cornish trade this being and antique oak pedestal desk and finally lot 480 reached £200 this was for a continental oak extending dining table.

 

CLOCKS AND BAROMETERS: 

A small selection of Clocks and Barometers went up for sale on Thursday afternoon with lot 545 achieving the highest price here of £440. This was for a brass cased repeating carriage clock in original leather travelling case. Two further prices worth mentioning were: lot 542, an onyx based eight day mantel clock with statue above which sold for just over its reserve price reaching £280. And lot 522, a painted Long Case clock dial by J. Brown of Modbury which sold to the local trade for £250.

 

MISCELLANEA AND COLLECTABLES: 

After the sale of the cased display of humming birds there were two further good sales in this section. These were: lot 833, an unusually large ships wheel from a Dutch Bark which made £330 selling to the local maritime trade and lot 732, a cased Victorian scratch built model of a house which sold to the Exeter trade for £240.

 

CHINA AND GLASS:

Two good sales here which sold for £160 each on Friday morning were: lot 1217, a Sevres porcelain dish dated 1771 and lot 1250, an Aller Vale pottery mug commemorating the Boer war 1899-1900.

 

TOYS: 

The two top prices for the Marklin steam engine and the Steiff teddy bear dominated the toy auction on Friday morning with one further good sale to mention. This was for lot 1523, an antique painted rocking horse on later trestle bas e which sold for its reserve price of £150.

 

SPORTING AND FISHING: 

A private collection of over 100 lots of Sporting and Fishing items was included at the start of Friday afternoons’ sale. Three good prices to mention in this extra section were: Lot 1716, an AYA 12 bore shotgun which sold for £200. Lot 1708,  a signed Cecil Aldin print of an Oxfordshire Inn which made £140 and finally lot 1605, a box of wooden reels which made £125.

 

PICTURES AND PAINTINGS:

Over 150 lots of Pictures and Paintings went up for sale on Friday afternoon. Top price in this section was for lot 1950, a George Henry Jenkins pair of oils on board of Westcountry coastal views signed and dated 1871. This lot sold for its reserve price of £600. The second highest price was for lot 1957 which made £520. This was an R.O. Lenkiewicz Lt Ed lithiograph print of “Bella with the Painter”. Shortly following this, selling to the phone for £500 was lot 1942, a Percy Lancaster watercolour of a young lady selling fruit. Finally lot 1893 a Harry Edmunds Crute oil on board of a windmill in a landscape sold for £260.
