NOVEMBER SALE REPORT 2009
REPORT ON TWO DAY AUCTION OF ANTIQUES AND SELECTED ITEMS: OUTSIDE EFFECTS, FURNITURE, CLOCKS, BAROMETERS, MISCELLANEA, COLLECTABLES, CHINA, GLASS, METALWORK, BOOKS, TOYS, SILVER PLATE, SILVER, JEWELLERY, PICTURES AND PAINTINGS HELD ON THURSDAY 19th AND FRIDAY 20th NOVEMBER 2009.
Rendells monthly two day sale of antiques and selected items was held on Thursday 19th and Friday 20th November 2009. This month’s sale included silver plate, silver and jewellery which went up for auction on Friday afternoon. Top price over the two day auction was for a platinum and diamond solitaire ring of approximately 2 carats which sold for £2,800. Shortly following this selling for £2,700 was a lot containing a Heeley’s double lever corkscrew, a two pillar open caged corkscrew with three others. Further top prices were selling for £2,600 a fine 3 stone diamond and 2 stone Kashmir sapphire ring. Finally a good 19th century mahogany pedestal desk with inset leather top sold for twice its reserve price reaching £1,080.
DOWNSTAIRS FURNITURE: A strong trade was received in the furniture auction on Thursday morning. Top price in the downstairs furniture section was for a Victorian mahogany walnut extending dining table which sold for £520. To follow this was a 19th century fruit wood dresser which sold to the Exeter trade for £390. Shortly to follow was a 19th century mahogany associated chest on chest which made £380 and a Victorian waxed pine linen press which made £320. One further lot which sold for £300 was an Edwardian mahogany inlaid cheval mirror. Further lots to mention which sold for over the £200 mark were an early 20th century walnut and ash arts and crafts pedestal dressing table which sold for £290. £260 was paid by the Exmoor trade for a Victorian mahogany glazed bookcase. £240 was paid for an antique chest of five drawers. £220, a price paid for two lots, these were a pine refectory table and a waxed pine three drawer dresser base. Two painted pine single door armoire’s both sold to the same buyer for £210 which was also the price paid for an antique oak dresser. Finally an oak roll topped desk sold to a private buyer for £200.
UPSTAIRS FURNITURE: Furniture continued to sell well upstairs with the mahogany pedestal desk achieving the top price here as already mentioned. To follow this selling for £500 was a regency mahogany Bergere library chair. £420 was paid for a 19th century gentleman’s library chair. £440 for a 19th century elm seated yew Windsor comb backed arm chair. £380 for a good quality mahogany inlaid Davenport. £360 was the price paid for three lots, these were a set of seven Victorian mahogany balloon backed dining chairs, an antique oak and cross banded kneehole desk and a good quality 19th century rosewood inlaid parlour cabinet. £300 for a Regency rosewood fold over card table and a 19th century carved gilt framed bevel edged mirror. Finally a 19th century mahogany birdcage tilt top table sold for £250.
CLOCKS AND BAROMETERS: A small selection of clocks and barometers went up for sale on Thursday afternoon with three good sales too mention. These were £330 paid for a painted eight day long case movement with moon phase which was purchase by a local private collector. £250 for a 19th century oak cased long case clock and £220 for a late 19th century mahogany cased dial wall clock bearing the name Iversen Bros, Kingsbridge.
MISCELLANEA AND COLLECTABLES: Over 200 lots were included in the Miscellanea and Collectables auction on Thursday afternoon with one further sale worth mentioning after the sale of the corkscrews. This was for a Cello by Roderick Paesold which sold for £250.
CHINA AND GLASS: Friday’s auction started with the china and glass as usual which included a good number of entries. Top price here was £300 which was paid for a collection of 21 rare Wade Disney Whimsies. £250 was paid for a Moorcroft pottery Cluny patterned ginger jar. £260 was paid for a large and impressive Lauder pottery jardinière. Finally two lots sold for £170 each. These were a Minton St James pattern part dinner and tea service and a Copeland and Garrett Parianware figure of Narcissus.
SILVER: A strong trade as usual was received with the silver sale on Friday afternoon. Top price here of £900 was for a pair of large and impressive Indian silver embossed bowls. To follow selling for £670 was an 18th century silver coffee pot. £290 was paid for a silver teapot and associated water jug stamped and dated Birmingham 1922. Finally £205 was paid for a set of four silver salts by George Unite stamped and dated Birmingham 1898 and 1899.
JEWELLERY: Rings continued to dominate the sales in the jewellery section. £920 was paid for a platinum and iridium art deco diamond solitaire ring. £800 for a fine 2 stone diamond and pearl ring. £250 was the price paid for an 18ct gold diamond and sapphire cluster ring. £200 was paid for a 14 ct gold and emerald cluster ring. One further lot to mention in the jewellery section was a good pair of diamond cluster earrings which sold for £580.
PICTURES AND PAINTINGS: Nearly 150 lots of pictures and paintings were included at the end of the November 2 day antique auction with two good sales to mention here. A R.O. Lenkiewicz Ltd Ed Lithiograph print of “Bella with the Painter” sold for £280. A Herbert Dicksee, R.A. engraving “Silent Sympathy” of a seated girl and a deerhound beside her sold for £180.
