REPORT ON TWO DAY AUCTION OF ANTIQUES AND SELECTED ITEMS: OUTSIDE EFFECTS, FURNITURE, CLOCKS, BAROMETERS, MISCELLANEA, COLLECTABLES, CHINA, GLASS, COUNTRY ARTISTS, BOOKS, TOYS, SILVER PLATE, SILVER, JEWELLERY, PICTURES AND PAINTINGS. HELD ON THURSDAY 27th AND FRIDAY 28th MAY 2010.
Rendells monthly two day sale of antiques and selected items was held on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th May 2010. This months sale included a large private collection of over 250 lots of silver and over 180 lots of jewellery which went up for sale on Friday afternoon. A small private collection of over 20 lots of figureens by Country Artists and Border Fine Arts was also included in Friday’s sale after the china and glass. Top price over the two day sale was £25,500 paid for an important and rare ebony framed wall mirror by Giovanni Battista Gatti circa 1875. The mirror was inlaid with etched ivory roundels with portraits of notable gentlemen. A platinum 5 stone diamond ring with centre stone approximately.5 carat sold for its reserve price of £1,000. Three further top prices were: a Watcombe pottery motto ware model of a “Cheshire cat” which sold for over ten times its reserve price making £540. A Georgian oak chest on chest made £500. Finally a Victorian mahogany double pedestal desk reached £460 selling to the Ashburton trade.
OUTSIDE EFFECTS: Two good sales to mention at the beginning of the sale were: a pair of granite pillars which sold for £310 and a large pine work bench with a record vice made £210.
DOWNSTAIRS FURNITURE: A fair trade was received in the Downstairs furniture on Thursday morning with an interesting Eastern European pine and wrought iron Troika (sledge) base achieving the second highest price here of £420. Further lots which sold well were: a late 19th century oak bureau bookcase which sold for £370. A good quality 19th century Chinese embroided silk panel of birds and flowers sold well to the Exeter trade for £300. An antique oak mule chest made £240. An antique oak dresser base shortly followed this selling for £230 along with an inlaid mahogany cocktail cabinet. £210 was paid for an antique oak and pine coffer. Finally 2 lots which both sold for £200 were: a 19th century mahogany linen press and a pine kitchen tables which sold to the local pine trade.
UPSTAIRS FURNITURE: The sale of the Italian ebony wall mirror obviously dominated the sales in this section being the highest price achieved for many years. However there were a number of further good sales to mention. The first being a Victorian inlaid walnut demi-lune fold over card table which was purchased by the Exeter trade for £350. Too shortly follow selling for £340 was a fine quality 19th century walnut table cabinet. A large Victorian cheval mirror having barley twist supports sold well as expected reaching £300. An Edwardian hardwood nest of 4 tables sold for £270. Finally a mahogany cylinder desk made £210.
CLOCKS AND BAROMETERS: Top price in this section was a fine 19th century French gilt metal and hand painted porcelain panelled mantel clock, with a Japy Freres eight day bell strike movement sold for £250.
MISCELLANEA AND COLLECTABLES: The Miscellanea and Collectables sale on Thursday afternoon consisted of nearly 350 lots with four good sales too mention. These were: a Cogswell and Harrison 12 bore double barrel shotgun which sold for £420. A pair of silhouettes signed Aug. Edouart, 1828 made £310. £260 was paid for a Victorian brass porch light. Finally a box of assorted Indian ivory sold well for £230.
CHINA AND GLASS: Over 350 lots were included in the china and glass sale on Friday morning receiving a strong trade probably the best seen this year. A large selection of royal Doulton female figureens and Royal Worcester birds were included in this section. The second highest price was for a Will Young pottery figure group titled: “After the fair at Widecombe in the Moor” which sold for £330 just over its reserve price. To shortly follow this selling for £310 was a Parianware figureen of the Abyssinian slave after John Bell. Two lots sold well for £250 these being a quantity of Copeland Spode Italian blue and white china and a large quantity of Royal Crown Derby Imari patterned china. A pair of Carltonware vases made £240 and a pair of Persian Isnik style vases made £210. Finally a large quantity of Royal Crown Derby “posies” pattern china reached its reserve price of £200.
SILVER: A private and comprehensive entry of silver was included in this month’s sale on Friday afternoon, one of the largest in many years and receiving a strong trade as usual. Top price in this section was £320 for 4 silver pin cushions, wirework carriages etc. the second highest price was £310 for a silver teapot and water jug stamped London 1899. To shortly follow this selling for £300 was a fine quality silver coffee pot stamped London 1756 by Thomas Whipham and Charles Wright. Two further good priced worth mentioning were: a continental .800 silver lady’s combined compact and cigarette case which sold for £200 along with a silver teapot stamped Sheffield 1921 by Walker and Hall.
JEWELLERY: The jewellery sale consisted of over 180 lots with some very good prices being achieved amongst the sale of Rings, Pocket Watches, Alberts, Chains, Necklaces and Bracelets.
Rings: Three further good ring sales were: an 18ct diamond flower head ring and an 18ct white gold diamond flower head ring which both sold for £450. An 18ct white gold large aquamarine and diamond ring made £380.
Two lots of ear-rings both sold for £450 each. These being a fine diamond and emerald pendant and a pair of ear-rings and a pair of diamond cluster head ear-rings. A large selection of gold Alberts, Necklaces, Chains and Bracelets sold for prices ranging from £200 to £400 suggesting a strong price for gold. A selection of gold pocket watches sold well with prices ranging from £200 to £280. Two final prices worth mentioning were: an 18ct two coloured gold and diamond cluster bracelet which sold for £300. A diamond and pearl heart shaped locket with enamel centre was purchased by the Exeter trade for £220.
PICTURES AND PAINTINGS: One lot too consider here was a J.C. Uren watercolour of stormy seas crashing onto high cliffs. This lot sold for twice its reserve price making £200.
