REPORT ON TWO DAY AUCTION OF ANTIQUES AND SELECTED ITEMS, OUTSIDE EFFECTS, FURNITURE, CLOCKS, BAROMETERS, MISCELLANEA, COLLECTABLES, CHINA, GLASS, BOOKS, TOYS, PICTURES AND PAINTINGS

HELD ON  THURSDAY 24th and FRIDAY 25th JUNE, 2010

Rendells held their two day auction of antiques and collectables on the 24th and 25th June at their Stonepark Salerooms in Ashburton.   Around 1,600 lots were on offer and were well received by the public and trade alike.

The furniture section saw several highlights including £1,000 paid from the Devon Trade for a late 17th Century walnut chest of drawers and £500 bid for an 18th Century Georgian mahogany chest of drawers.   A mahogany serving table fetched £390 whilst a pine double pedestal desk fetched £260.   A lady from the South Hams furnished her garden with a wrought iron pogoda seat for £220.

Two clocks stood out from the fifty or so lots:  a carved oak longcase clock sold to the trade for £420 and a brass cased repeating carriage clock made £360.

The miscellanea section saw its usual 300+ lot entry and a full auction room.   A good General Service Medal Group was competed by collectors in the room and on the telephone, finally selling for an expected £400.   A small 18ct. gold fob watch sold for £280, and a rare Devon Regiment Bandsman’s drum sold to a London Museum for £260.   A pair of bronze models of lions sold for £200.

The china section saw its usual large 300+ lots on offer and with a lot of pre-sale interest and a good attendance on the day, a lot of items found new homes.   Amongst the highlights a collection of fourteen Beatrix Potter ornaments sold for £260 and a set of ten Beswick sporting cats sold to the same collector for £150.   A rare Staffordshire treacle glazed model of a cat sold for £200 and two Chinese Export Mugs sold for £190.   Amongst the decorative objects, a pair of Clarice Cliff Bizarre candlesticks sold for £135.

The painting section showed its usual fickle side with traditional watercolours and oils hard to sell, but  high quality and a good name always helps and an oil by Colette Bouvard of a Venetian Scene sold over the telephone to the London Trade for an expected £1,500.   A collector from Manchester travelled a long way to the auction rooms to purchase two signed prints by the Mancunion artist L.S. Lowry for which he paid £260 and £150.

OUR NEXT SALE ON Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd JULY will include OUTSIDE EFFECTS, FURNITURE, CLOCKS, BAROMETERS, MISCELLANEA, COLLECTABLES, CHINA, GLASS, RUGS, BOOKS, TOYS, SILVER, SILVER PLATE AND JEWELLERY, PICTURES & PAINTINGS.
