JUNE SALE REPORT 2009

 

REPORT ON TWO DAY AUCTION OF ANTIQUES AND SELECTED ITEMS: OUTSIDE EFFECTS, FURNITURE, CLOCKS, BAROMETERS, MISCELLANEA, COLLECTABLES, CHINA, GLASS, METALWORK, RUGS, BOOKS, TOYS, SPORTING ITEMS, SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS, CAMERAS, PICTURES AND PAINTINGS. HELD ON THURSDAY 18th AND FRIDAY 19th JUNE 2009.

 

Rendells monthly two day sale of antiques and selected items was held on Thursday 18th and Friday 19th June 2009. This month’s auction included the annual summer sale of toys, dolls, sporting and scientific items. The next auction to include these special sections will be held before Christmas on Friday 18th December 2009. Top price over the two day sale was for lot 1279, a large private collection of Beswick Beatrix Potter figures, 63 in total. This lot sold for just over its reserve price reaching £1,700. The second highest price was achieved by lot 1907 an indistinctly signed oil on panel of a 19th century coastal view of Oyster Gatherers. This lot sold to the phone for £700. An antique mahogany cased longcase clock having painted dial and rolling moon being lot 553 sold for its reserve price of £550. Finally a 19th century barograph by the well known London makers: Negretti and Zambra, lot 511 sold to the phone for £460.

 

DOWNSTAIRS FURNITURE: 

Over 200 lots were included in the downstairs furniture sale on Thursday morning receiving a good trade and attendance as usual. Three top prices which sold for over £300 were: Lot 277, a Georgian mahogany breakfront sideboard which sold for its reserve price of £350 to a new buyer. Shortly following this was lot 276 selling for £340, this being a Victorian carved oak cabinet below a glazed top. A carved oak settle, lot 298 sold well for £310. A good number of lots sold for over £200, these included lot 254 a 19th century French waxed pine buffet dresser which made £280. This was followed by lot 137, an oak monk’s bench which sold well for £270. Lot 129 a nice 19th century gilt console table and over mantle, a great piece for restoration sold well over its reserve price for £260. A carved oak buffet with marble, lot 286sold for £220 and lot 201 a 19th century gentleman’s Scottish chest of drawers sold for just over its reserve price making £210. Finally two lots sold for £200 each, these being: lot 252 a waxed pine two door wardrobe and lot 287 an antique oak panetted mule chest.      

 

UPSTAIRS FURNITURE: 

Furniture continued to sell well upstairs. Lot 403 achieved the top price of £250, this being an antique oak refectory table. Shortly following this sale was lot 368, a nice glazed rosewood bookcase which sold for £240. Lots 353 and 358 both made £220 each these being a pair of 19th century walnut framed library chairs and a Victorian bow front chest of drawers. Two further lots sold for £210, these were lot 468 a pair of leather arm chairs designed by Gote-Mobley of Sweden and lot 475 a pair of oak framed Glastonbury chairs. Finally lots 420 and 427 reached £200 each, these were an early 19th century pitch pine mule chest and a Victorian elm seated arm chair.

 

CLOCKS AND BAROMETERS: 

The Clocks and Barometers sale on Thursday afternoon consisted of just over 50 lots with two further sales worth mentioning which were lot 552, another mahogany cased long case clock by James Thompson of Darlington which sold well fro £420, and lot 503, a mahogany cased bracket clock having double fuse movement which reached £360 selling to a new buyer from Dorset.

 

MISCELLANEA AND COLLECTABLES:

A good selection of over 200 lots of miscellanea and collectables went up for sale after the Clocks and Barometers to finish Thursday’s sale. Top price in this section was for lot 864 an 1848 Campaign Punjab medal awarded to J. Horslen of the 9th Lancers. After receiving a lot of interest this lot sold for £360. Lot 753 a pair of 19th century needlework pictures sold for over three times their reserve price making £310. Lot 800 a postcard album and contents sold well for £290 and lot 855 a quantity of world coins made £200.

 

CHINA AND GLASS:

350 lots went up for sale in the China and Glass sale on Friday morning with the sale of the 63 Beswick Beatrix Potter figureens easily dominating the sales in this section. Two Moorcroft lots sold well as usual, these were  firstly lot 1332, a tall “Lily” patterned vase which made £160 and lot 1327 a “Hibiscus” patterned dish which sold for its reserve of £140. Two individual lots of Wade ornaments sold well as expected, these were lot 1337, a set of five Wade Golliwog bandsmen which reached their reserve price of £150 and lot 1171,a quantity of Wade Disney and other characters which sold to the Torquay trade for £120. Finally lot 1278, a set of five Beswick Disney “Winnie the Pooh” figures sold for £100.

 

METALWORK: 

A small selection as usual of Metalwork was included in Friday’s morning sale after the China and Glass. Two good prices too mention here included lot 1427, an Art Deco table lamp in the form of a dancing lady which after receiving some stiff bidding reached £220. Lot 1432, a bronze sculpture of a dancing lady after Pierre Le Faquays sold to the phone for £180.

 

BOOKS:

As usual a small selection of books went up for auction on Friday with one lot worth mentioning, this being lot 1477, a set of six John Wright “The Fruit Growers Guide” which sold for £240.

 

TOYS:  

A very large scratch built doll’s house and assorted furniture topped the prices in the Toys sale reaching £260, being lot 1577. Shortly following this was lot 1575 a boxed Dinky Toys “Mayo Composite Aircraft”, No. 63 which sold very well for £240.

 

PICTURES AND PAINTINGS: 

A smaller quantity of just over 100 lots of pictures and paintings finished the two day sale on Friday afternoon with the sale of the Oyster gatherers oil on panel dominating the sales here as already mentioned. The second highest price achieved here was for lot 1877, a 19th century clock oil on panel with church and estuary scene, inscribed verso: Simpson 1805 which sold for its reserve price of £300 to a local private collector. Three further lots to consider here were: lot 1875, a Bertram Morrish watercolour of an extensive Dartmoor view of Steeperton Tor with the river Taw in the foreground being appealing to the Dartmoor trade. This lot sold for its reserve price of £180. Lot 1894, an Augustus William Ennes oil on canvas of sheep in a moorland pool signed and dated 07, so quite recent sold for £160. Finally lot 1876, a Henri Stacquet watercolour of a figure in a landscape with windmill reached £130.
