JULY SALE REPORT 2009
REPORT ON TWO DAY AUCTION OF ANTIQUES AND SELECTED ITEMS, OUTSIDE EFFECTS, FURNITURE, CLOCK, BAROMETERS, MISCELLANEA, COLLECTABLES, CHINA, GLASS, METALWORK, TOYS, BOOKS, RUGS, SILVER PLATE, SILVER, JEWELLERY, PICTURES AND PAINTINGS. HELD ON THURSDAY 16th AND FRIDAY 17th JULY 2009.
Rendells monthly two day sale of antiques and selected items was held on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th July 2009. This month’s sale included silver plate, silver and jewellery.Top price over the two day sale was for lot 88, a MGF sports car which sold well for £2,700. The second highest price was for lot 1655, a sterling silver part twelve setting service by the Boston jewellery’s Shreve, Crump and Low. This lot sold for £850. Lot 386, a set of eight 19th century mahogany framed Hepplewhite design dining chairs consisting of six plus two carvers sold for £840 and finally lot 1786, a large and impressive opal and diamond cluster ring sold for £700 . OUTSIDE EFFECTS: The sale got of to a good start with over ninety lots of outside effects. Two further good sales too mention here included lot 3, a nice large pair of terracotta urns which sold to the Exeter trade for £270. Lot 9, a large granite trough sold well as usual reaching £200.
DOWNSTAIRS FURNITURE: A good trade was received in the downstairs furniture sale on Thursday morning with lot 243 achieving the highest price of £430 here, for two pedestal wine tables. A number of lots which sold for over the £200 mark were: lot 305, a pine single mirrored door wardrobe which sold to a new buyer for £280. Lot 144, an oak settle with lift up seat made £270. Lot 304,a pine housekeeper’s cupboard standing on six drawer base sold well for £260. Three individual lots sold for £250 each. These were: Lot 205, an oak Globe Wernicke style bookcase. Lot 334, a 19th century bow front mahogany chest of drawers and lot 335, a 19th century gilt framed oval mirror. A mahogany chest of drawers, lot 186 reached £240. Finally lot 314, a late 19th century pitch pine Arts and Crafts double wardrobe made £200.
UPSTAIRS FURNITURE: Some good prices were achieved in the upstairs furniture sale with lot 447 being the second highest price of £510 achieved here. This lot consisted of a pair of leather and brass studded wing arm chairs. Lot 443, a Regency mahogany and satin birch chest of drawers sold to a new buyer for £400 along with lot 482 a 19th century mahogany and walnut stretcher table, Two lots sold for £390 each. These were lot 436, a nice Georgian mahogany bow fronted corner cupboard and lot 452, a Georgian mahogany chest of drawers. Lot 439, a 19th century walnut glazed two door bookcase sold to the Ashburton trade for £250. Finally two lots made £200 each. These being lot 384, an antique oak coffer and lot 476, a George 2nd style low boy which sold to the Exeter trade.
MISCELLANEA AND COLLECTABLES: A good selection of nearly 300 lots of miscellanea and collectables went up for sale on Thursday afternoon. Some good prices too mention here were: lot 817, a box of coins which sold for £200. Lot 729, a box containing a stereoscope and slides of Palestine and India by Underwood and Underwood made £170. Lot 838, a treen nutmeg grater and a treen snuff box sold to the Westcountry trade for £160. Two lots sold for £130 each. These being lot 739, a pair of brass and cast iron fire dogs and lot 850, a tin of medals and cap badges. Finally lot 640, a black Bakelite telephone in good condition sold for £125.
CHINA AND GLASS: Top price in the china and glass section was for lot 1010, four blue and white meat plates which sold to the Exeter trade for £420. Lot 1236, a Staffordshire cow and calf made £190. Lot 1101, three stoneware cider flagons reached £140 selling to a Plymouth collector. Lot 1278, three Bristol blue spirit decanters and three Royal Worcester dishes sold well to the local trade for £100.
TOYS: A selection of toys were included in Friday morning’s sale with one good price too mention. This was lot 1467, a German bisque headed doll and one other stamped Germany 971 A.M. This lot sold for its reserve price of £150.
SILVER: This month’s sale included the additional sections of silver plate, silver and jewellery. Although entered in the silver plate section lot 1557 included a fine silver match striker which sold for £600. Further lots to mention in the silver section were: lot 1657, eighteen .925 silver pill boxes and three others which made £110. Lot 1619, a pair of silver salts, a silver cased scent bottle and vesta case sold to the Exeter trade for £95. Lot 1635, a silver tankard with applied Egypt badge sold for £90.
JEWELLERY: A large selection of jewellery was included in the July sale receiving a good trade as usual. The second highest price achieved here was £180 for lot 1733, a modern 18ct gold brooch in the form of a cat which was purchased by a local dealer from Torbay. Shortly following this was lot 1717, an 18ct gold sovereign ring which made £170. Lot 1785, an 18ct gold sapphire and diamond cluster ring sold for £155. Two lots sold for £150 each. These being lot 1735, a pair of gold fox head studs and a 9ct gold cat charm and brooch etc, and lot 1759, a 9ct gold half hunter pocket watch. Finally lot 1755, a 15ct gold leaf and scrolled pendant sold for £145.
PICTURES AND PAINTINGS: Over 100 lots of pictures and paintings went up for sale to finish the July month’s auction. Lot 1952 reached the highest price here of £280 being an acrylic on canvas by Mike Nance of a moorland scene. Lot 1948, a pair of oils on tin in the manner of Davis Teniers of taverns scenes sold for their reserve price of £150. Finally lot 1963, a R.O. Lenkiewicz pencil sketch study of a man made £140, its reserve price.
