JANUARY SALE REPORT 2010

 

REPORT ON TWO DAY AUCTION OF ANTIQUES AND SELECTED ITEMS: OUTSIDE EFFECTS, FURNITURE, CLOCKS, BAROMETERS, MISCELLANEA, CHINA, GLASS, METALWORK, RUGS, BOOKS, TOYS, SILVER PLATE, SILVER, JEWELLERY, PICTURES AND PAINTINGS. HELD ON THURSDAY 28th AND FRIDAY 29th JANUARY 2010.

 

Rendells monthly two day sale of antiques and selected items was held on Thursday 28th and Friday 29th January 2010. The opening sale of the year received a good attendance and a strong trade on both  sale days. Top price for the two day sale was for lot 376, a set of six late 19th Century/early 20th Century Windsor elm seated arm chairs. This lot sold well as expected making £700. The second highest price was for lot 1743, a platinum stepped five stone ring which sold for £640.  A Robert Lenkiewicz Limited Edition silkscreen of the painter with Esther made £630. An antique eight day long case clock movement by Stepn Thorogood of London sold for £600. Two lots sold for £520 each, these being lot 811, an O.B.E. and a Second World War medal group including the Africa campaign medal with the Kenya bar and lot 1156, a pair of Watcombe pottery terracotta figures of a boy and girl. An 18ct. five stone diamond millegrain set ring sold for £500 to a local buyer.

           

DOWNSTAIRS FURNITURE: 

A good start to the sale with most lots selling. An oak window seat sold to the Exeter trade for £350. A Georgian mahogany inlaid corner cupboard  sold for £330. Lot 171, a Gothic oak refectory table made £310. Lots which sold for over the £200 mark were as follows - Lot 289, a Victorian carved oak bookcase made £270. Three lots which sold for £250 included lot 96, a 19th century mahogany chest of drawers. Lot 99, a pine glazed dresser and lot 248, a mahogany bow front chest of drawers.  Lot 188, a Jacobean style oak chest of drawers made £240. Two lots which sold for £210 were lot 173, a pair of Glastonbury chairs and lot 317, a large gilt framed pier/over mantle mirror. Finally lot 172. An oval extending dining table fetched  £200

 

UPSTAIRS FURNITURE: 

The set of six Windsor arm chairs dominated the prices. Lot 455, a nice Burr Maple octagonal 2 tier occasional table sold for £290. Lot 430, an 18th century mule chest made £280. Two lots which made £270 were lot 362, a 19th century mahogany bow front chest of drawers and lot 427, a late Victorian oak 3 drawer library table. Lots 450 and 454 both made £260, these being an antique oak side table and a Georgian mahogany chest of drawers. A 19th century mahogany two flap table reached  £210.

  

CLOCKS AND BAROMETERS: 

A  selection of over 50 lots of clocks and barometers were offered on Thursday afternoon.  A 19th Century brass cased bracket clock having a double fuse movement  sold for £330.  Lot 535, a nice early Victorian drop dial wall clock inlaid with mother of pearl sold for £300.  A French gilt mantel clock with porcelain panels and a  marble drum clock each fetched £250. Lot 521, a miniature chinoiserie long case clock by Elliot made £230 and finally lot 538, a 19th century walnut cased bracket clock made £200.

 

MISCELLANEA AND COLLECTABLES:

Two albums of World bank notes sold to the local trade for £300 and lot 748, a Lymington Bank white five pound note dated 1879 and three 50 Franc notes  made £280.

 

CHINA AND GLASS: 

Over 200 lots were included in the china and glass sale on Friday morning. Lot 1142 achieved  £320, this was for a pair of Watcombe pottery terracotta busts of a boy and girl. Lot 1210, a Moorcroft pottery Lamina patterned vase sold for £240. Lot 1138, three Beswick Hereford calves, after some strong bidding sold well for £210. A Moorcroft pottery ginger jar decorated with skaters for the Christmas period made £200.

 

SILVER: 

A choice selection of silver was included in Friday afternoon’s sale once again meeting a very strong demand. Top price  was for lot 1589, a part canteen of silver cutlery by Elizabeth Eaton, London 1849/1850 fetching £470. A set of six silver soup spoons, London 1898 made £185.  A cut glass claret jug having silver top, London 1912  reached £180.  Lot 1569, a three piece silver tea set, Birmingham 1910 sold for £170 and after receiving a lot of interest an Indian silver embossed tankard finally went under the hammer  for £160.         

                                                                                               

JEWELLERY: 

Lot 1692, four silver cased pocket watches sold for £250 and lot 1713, an 18ct. gold, diamond and amethyst ring by Susan Vedadi sold for £235.

 

PICTURES AND PAINTINGS: 

Over 100 lots of pictures and paintings were included at the end of the two day sale. An early 19th century oil on canvas half length portrait of a gentleman made £300, and a similar painting made £210. Both paintings were bought by the same buyer.
