DECEMBER SALE REPORT 2009;
REPORT ON TWO DAY SALE OF ANTIQUES AND SELECTED ITEMS: OUTSIDE EFFECTS, FURNITURE, CLOCKS, BAROMETERS, MISCELLANEA, COLLECTABLES, CHINA, GLASS, METALWORK, RUGS, BOOKS, TOYS, SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS, SPORTING ITEMS, CAMERAS, PICTURES AND PAINTINGS.
Rendells monthly two day sale of antiques and selected items was held on Thursday 17th and Friday 18th December 2009. A good attendance was present on both of the sale days resulting in a fair trade. Top price over the two day sale was for a F. J. Widgery watercolour and gouache of a moor land landscape above Lydford which sold for £1,300. Shortly following this sale selling for £1,100 was a fine George 2nd mahogany chest of five drawers. Further top prices were as follows: £750 for a Clarence Roe oil on canvas of a stag in a highland loch. £560 for a John White watercolour of Branscombe. £510 for a Georgian mahogany cockbeaded chest of four drawers.
OUTSIDE EFFECTS: A smaller number of enteries than usual were included in the Outside Effects section on Thursday morning with one good price too mention here of £270 for a pair of impressive Blashfield vases.
DOWNSTAIRS FURNITURE: Over 200 lots of furniture were included in the Downstairs furniture sale on Thursday morning. The second highest price here was £480 for an antique oak refectory table which sold to the Westcountry trade. To follow this was £330 for an oak Stolzenberg sixteen drawer document cabinet. £300 for a large oak table being brought by the Ashburton trade and one other purchased by the same buyer for £290. A number of lots which sold for over the £200 mark were: an antique refectory table for, an oak Stolzenberg 12 drawer document cabinet and a 19th century mahogany four drawer chest all of which were purchased by the Exeter trade for £220. £210 for an oak monks bench and a mid 19th century mahogany two door panelled wardrobe. Finally an Edwardian oak leather topped nine drawer pedestal desk sold for £200.
UPSTAIRS FURNITURE: Furniture continued to sell well upstairs with four further good sales too mention. These were: £440 for a Victorian rosewood framed and button backed double ended settee in good condition. £310 for a William 4th rosewood fold over tea table with fluted pedestal and a Victorian mahogany pedestal dressing table. Both were brought by the same buyer. Finally £230 was paid for and oak mule chest.
MISCELLANEA AND COLLECTABLES: Over 250 lots were included in the Miscellanea and Collectables sale on Thursday afternoon. Included was a small selection of jewellery for the Christmas buyers. Top price in this section was £250 for an 18ct amethyst and diamond cluster ring. To shortly follow for £240 was a mother of pearl trinket box and an ivory boxed set of dominoes. Two further lots which sold over the £200 mark were £225 for a cast iron based oil lamp and £200 for a nice pair of Austrian cold painted Spaniel book ends.
CHINA AND GLASS: Top price in the China and Glass section on Friday morning was £420 which was paid for a large and comprehensive Royal Worcester “Evesham” patterned dinner and tea service. Two further lots too mention which both sold for £270 were a quantity of miscellaneous china including trinket boxes and minature vases, and a Moorcroft pottery Pomegranate pattern two handled comport of the William period circa 1926. A Moorcroft pottery Kyoto pattern charger made £185 and a Moorcroft pottery Noah’s Ark pattern Ltd Ed ginger jar sold for £170. Finally a large pair of Barumware “Ribbon Cut” and “Cavendish” shop tobacco jars sold to the Ashburton trade for £160.
TOYS: A large number of toys went up for sale on Friday afternoon with one good price too mention of £330 for a Dapple grey rocking horse on trestle wooden base.
PICTURES AND PAINTINGS: After the various top prices in this section as already mentioned there were five good sales worth mentioning. A F. J. Widgery gouache of Anicombe hill and the west Okement valley on Dartmoor sold for £480 just over its reserve price. A R. D. Sherrin gouache Dartmoor view with pool and path in foreground made its reserve price of £400. £340 was paid for a James W. Milliken pair of watercolours of flowers and a market street scene. Finally £260 was the price paid for a George Lilly Anderson watercolour of an extensive view of Teignmouth harbour with numerous moored sailing vessels.
