AUGUST SALE REPORT 2009
REPORT ON TWO DAY SALE OF ANTIQUES AND SELECTED ITEMS: OUTSIDE EFFECTS, FURNITURE, CLOCKS, BAROMETERS, MISCELLANEA, COLLECTABLES, CHINA, GLASS, METALWORK, RUGS, BOOKS, TOYS, PICTURES AND PAINTINGS. HELD ON THURSDAY 13th AND FRIDAY 14th AUGUST 2009.
Rendells monthly two day sale of antiques and selected items was held on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th August 2009. Top price over the two day sale was achieved by two lots. These were Lot 375, a nice 19th Century walnut inlaid credenza and Lot 1879, an 18th Century oil on canvas oval portrait of a lady within a good gilt swept frame. Both of these lots sold well as expected selling for £1,300 each. Shortly following this was Lot 344, a fine Georgian mahogany chest on chest which sold for £1,250. Lot 1458, pair of oriental pictorial rugs decorated with flowers and animals made £800, and Lot 306, an antique mixed wood drugs and seed run of thirty five drawers sold to the phone for over twice its reserve price reaching £740.
DOWNSTAIRS FURNITURE: The August antiques auction started well with the downstairs furniture on Thursday morning. The third highest price achieved was for Lot 335, a 19th century carved ornate gilt framed mirror which sold to an Italian buyer for £520. Lots selling for over £200 were Lots 340 and 345 which both made £260, these being a reproduction walnut chest on chest and a nice Victorian button backed chaise longué. Lot 258, an oak four section Wernicke style bookcase by Gunn of the USA sold for £230. Finally two lots sold for £200 each, these were Lot 279, a 19th Century enclosed pine dresser selling to the Cornish trade and Lot 308, a large lacquered oriental cabinet which was purchased by the same buyer . UPSTAIRS FURNITURE: The sale continued its momentum upstairs with Lot 445 achieving the second highest price of £400. This was for a mahogany extending dining table and was purchased by a private buyer. To follow this were two lots selling for the same price of £380. These were Lot 446, a set of eight 19th Century mahogany bar backed dining chairs and Lot 430, a French style inlaid mahogany work table. Lot 423 a French Louis style knee hole dressing/writing table sold to a new buyer for £330. Lot 374 a 19th Century walnut inlaid Davenport enclosing a maple interior made £300.Lot 415, an upholstered chaise longué made £270 and Lot 352, an inlaid mahogany demi-lune glazed display cabinet sold to the local trade for £230.
CLOCKS: A slightly smaller selection than usual of clocks went up for sale on Thursday afternoon. Lot 542, a 19th Century oak cased thirty hour long case clock sold for just over its reserve price making £320. Lot 530, a gilded repeating carriage clock sold to a Plymouth dealer for £250.
MISCELLANEA AND COLLECTABLES: The miscellanea and collectables section consisted of over 300 lots. Top price in this section was for Lot 559. A very nice Corinthian column oil lamp going for £250. Lots 634 and 895 sold for £200 each, being a bronzed sun dial and a good rosewood and brass bound travelling case having silver topped accessories. Lot 899 a box of coins sold for £150. Lot 737, a wooden boxed Jacques croquet set sold well as usual reaching £140.
CHINA AND GLASS: A fast start with selective bidding on Friday morning. Top price here was for Lot 1295, a Moorcroft pottery Hibiscus vase which sold for £200. Further lots which sold for over £100 in this section included Lot 1126, a Maiolica wet drug jar and one other which sold to a Dartmoor dealer for £150. Lot 1166, a Belleek porcelain teapot sold for £125, Lot 1329, a pair of pink glass lustres £110, finally lots 1194 and 1217 fetched £100 each. These were a Wemyss jam pot and a Rene Lalique glass dish although at fault.
METALWORK: Friday morning saw Lot 1442 a tall bronzed model of a Pixie with a shell sell for £160 and Lot 1431, a bronzed model of a dancing lady on a marble base sell for £100.
PICTURES AND PAINTINGS: Nearly 200 lots of pictures and paintings went up for sale on Friday afternoon with some good prices being achieved. The second highest price achieved was for Lot 1839, a Frederick J. Widgery watercolour of a moorland landscape with distant tors. This lot sold for £500. Lot 1889, a R.O. Lenkiewicz Ltd Ed Lithiograph of Fiorella sold for just over its reserve price making £360. Lot 1878, a John McGregor oil on canvas of sheep by a highland stream made £340. Lot 1820, a M. House watercolour of a girl with scroll reached £220. Lot 1843, an R.H. Moore ink and watercolour study of a cow and goats sold for £260. Another ink and watercolour picture by him of dogs in an interior sold for £150. Finally Lot 1877, a pair of oils on canvas by Hicks of Highland Loch scenes made £140. Top price was £1,300 for the oval picture of a lady sold on behalf of an American client.
